Several children, parents and volunteers gathered at the Thursday afternoon to start a community garden.

David Crowley said the garden will teach children about healthy eating, while also helping them to learn about planting and taking care of a garden.

Once the vegetables are grown, children will harvest them through camp programs at the Y and donate the food to the , the city's food pantry.

Mayor Scott Galvin was on hand to help the children garden.

"I think this is a great program," said the mayor. He stopped to talk to many of the kids about the project, as well as plant some radishes in the garden.

The Woburn community garden is supported by SCI, as well as the Massachusetts Service Alliance. Both organizations support volunteerism in Woburn and state-wide.
