UPDATE: Slain Police Officer Identified as Jack Maguire

Middlesex District Attorney's office confirms that Maguire was shot and killed responding to an armed robbery attempt at Kohl's Sunday night.

Woburn Police Officer John "Jack" Maguire was responding to an at Sunday night.

According to Middlesex District Attorney Gerry Leone and Woburn Police Chief Philip Mahoney, Scott Hanwright, 19, of Wakefield, was charged with first-degree murder, as well as armed robbery, while Kevin Dingwell, 51, of Wakefield, was charged with accessory after the fact.

A third suspect, who has not yet been positively identified, was fatally shot by police. 

Hanwright and Dingwell will be arraigned Monday in Woburn District Court. 

"This is a horribly tragic and troubling incident in which a veteran officer was fatally shot in the line of duty," said Leone.  "We continue to investigate the circumstances of the shooting and will update the public with information as it is developed.  Our thoughts and prayers are with Officer Maguire's family and his colleagues on the Woburn Police force at this time."

According to authorities, at 8:42 p.m. last night, Woburn Police officers responded to 911 calls of an armed robbery at Kohl's Department Store on Washington Street. Scanner transmissions report that the men allegedly held a gun to two female employees at Kohl's jewelry department and demanded they open a safe.

Officers responded to the scene and engaged in foot pursuit of Hanwright and a third suspect, according to authorities. At that time, it is alleged that the third suspect and Maguire exchanged gunfire and both were fatally wounded.  The officer was transported to the Lahey Clinic, where he later died.

A second police officer, involved in the foot pursuit, was taken to Winchester Hospital for precautionary reasons at approximately 9:27 p.m. Sunday.

The unidentified third suspect was pronounced dead at the scene. According to scanner transmissions, the medical examiner arrived on scene at 1:19 a.m. Monday to pick-up the remains of the suspect.

Hanwright is alleged to have fled down Washington Street, where it is alleged Dingwell attempted to pick him up.  Both were arrested at this time. 

The police-involved shooting and resulting deaths will be investigated by the DA's office. The investigation into the incident remains active and ongoing.  The investigation is being conducted by Woburn Police and State Police assigned to the Middlesex District Attorney's Office.
