The family of former Bloomfield Township supervisor Fred Korzon on Thursday announced plans for memorials on March 8 and 9. The long-time township resident and government leader died at his home last weekend at age 89.

Visitation is from 6-8 p.m. on Friday, March 8 at Cross of Christ Lutheran Church, and a memorial service is planned for Saturday, March 9 at 1 p.m.

Korzon moved to then-rural Bloomfield Township with wife, Ruth, shortly after marrying in 1946, and was instrumental in the development of Fox Croft and Shorewood Hills subdivisions, according to his obituary.

He started his civic service in the late 1960s and was first elected supervisor in 1984, following his appointment to the position in 1982, a news release from Bloomfield Township stated. He served in that post until 1999, when he resigned and appointed then-Treasurer Dave Payne.

"The apex of his career was serving the citizens of Bloomfield Township and maintaining its natural beauty," the obituary reads. By the time he retired, at age 75, the former World War II bombardier served as president of the South Eastern Michigan Council of Governments, one the board of Oakland County Parks and Recreation and was consistently involved with the Lutheran City Ministries.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to the Fred Korzon Memorial Scholarship Fund at Concordia University, 4090 Geddes Rd. Ann Arbor, MI 48105.
