Droves of community members came out to support a Dearborn family in need Tuesday at west Dearborn's Yogurtown.

The self-serve yogurt shop held a fundraiser for three local children who lost both of their parents within the past month. A portion of proceeds between 5-10 p.m. went to Michael, Chastity and Drako Cannizzaro, and their grandmother and guardian, Shirley Sironen.

The children—all of whom attend Dearborn Public Schools—lost their mother, Nikki, to cancer just before Christmas. And on Jan. 20, their father, Ray, passed away from a pulmonary embolism.

Friend of the family and fellow Dearborn parent Alysia Schuler has spearheaded efforts to raise funds for the family through word of mouth and media outlets.

Fundraising as of Tuesday had already reached $1,050.

Totals from Yogurtown sales, plus cash donations to the family made at the event, haven't been counted yet. But if the turnout was any indication, the outlook is good that the Cannizzaro children will have a brighter future, thanks to the generosity of the Dearborn community.
