Dearborn Shelter to Host Fall Adopt-A-Thon Saturday

"Fall" in love with a new pet at the outdoor event, a partnership with Goodwill.

Dearborn Shelter to Host Fall Adopt-A-Thon Saturday

Record high numbers of animals coming through the Dearborn Animal Shelter’s doors inspired the local organization to host another outdoor, tented event.

The Fall in Love Adopt-A-Thon will take place Saturday, Oct. 13, from 11 a.m.-5 p.m. in the parking lot in front of the Dearborn Goodwill store, located at 22451 Michigan Ave. near the intersection of Military.

The event is a partnership with Goodwill, which will be accepting donations of furniture, housewares and gently used clothing.

Friends For the Dearborn Animal Shelter Executive Director Elaine Green said the event will be modeled off of the success of the shelter's tented adoption drive, held in August in the Westborn Mall parking lot.

“We strive to find homes for the animals in our care as creatively as possible," she said, "and reaching out to locations that have existing traffic is one of the ways that helps us expand their visibility.”

In addition to the adoptable animals in the heated tent, there will be Fido Bakery dog treats for sale, shelter merchandise and more. Attendees are also welcome to drop by with their canine companions to participate in a dog costume contest at 1 p.m.

To help encourage families to consider adoption, the shelter is reducing dog adoption fees by 50 percent, and cats are only $5 to adopt through Saturday for animals more than four months old.

There will be many animals to choose from at the event, including cats, kittens, dogs and puppies.

Public Relations Director of Goodwill Detroit Mark Lane commented that the partnership of Goodwill and Friends For the Dearborn Animal Shelter is a good one.

“This is a great way for our Dearborn location to take part with a fellow non-profit organization to help one another," he said. "We think it is a perfect partnership to adopt a pet and donate for jobs at the same time."
