Dexter Track Teams Bring Home Hardware from Saline

The Dexter High School varsity track and field teams competed in the Golden Triangle Invitational at Saline May 7. The meet annually attracts some of the top teams from throughout Washtenaw County.

“With the exception of a 15-minute downpour, it was nice to have some good weather for the kids to compete in,” Dexter coach Dave Testa said. “We wanted to treat this meet as a preview for regionals. The kids had a great day, bringing home medals in 15 events. It was our best showing at this meet in recent years.”

In the girls’ meet, the Dreadnaughts dominated the pole vault, taking four of the top five places. Winning the event for Dexter was Micaela Conter, clearing 11 feet, 6 inches. Claire Tewksbury was second with a mark of 10-6, while Michelle Klein was fourth with a personal best 10-0 and Katie Callaghan was fifth, also with a personal best of 10-0.

In the 3,200-meter run, Emily Pap placed fifth with a season-best time of 11:47, while Caci Dishman was seventh in a season-best 11:48 and Tori Waidley was ninth in a season-best 11:51 for Dexter.

Elise Dombkowski crossed the line fourth in the freshmen 1,600-meter run in 5:49, while Cailin McLean was fifth in 5:51 for the Dreadnaughts.

Katie Adler, Emalie Taylor, Tara Stetler and Emily Assenmacher placed sixth in the distance medley relay with a clocking of 14:45 for Dexter.

In the boys’ meet, the Dreadnaughts once again bested the field in the pole vault, as Jeremy Horner finished first with a season-best 15-0, while Andrew Herring was second with a 13-6.

Noah Hiser placed third in the high jump with a height of 5-9. He was also second in the 400-meter run in 51.5 for Dexter.

Dreadnaught Corey Birchmeier placed sixth in the 1,600-meter run in a state-regional-qualifying 4:38.1, while Matt Greve was seventh in 4:38.9 and Parker Latshaw was eighth in 4:41. In the freshmen 1,600-meter run, Zach Tidwell finished fourth in a personal best 4:45 for Dexter.

Taylor Neely ended up second in the 3,200-meter run with a season-best and state-regional-qualifying time of 9:37, while Mike Hauke was ninth in a state-regional-qualifying 10:06 for the Dreads.

In the 3,200-meter relay, the Dexter foursome of Birchmeier, Latshaw, Tidwell and Neely placed fourth in 8:32.

“I’m really happy with how the kids came out and competed at this meet,” Testa said. “This will go a long way in helping us get ready for the upcoming regional meet.”
