5 Things You Should Know Today - Martin Luther King, Jr. Day

Since 1986, the country has set aside the third Monday in January to honor the life of civil rights champion Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Here's what you need to know about today's federal holiday:

1. The weather

The morning should remain clear for today's Martin Luther King, Jr. walk, but there's a 50 percent chance of rain this afternoon. The National Weather Service predicts a high around 37 and a low around 34, with increasing chances for rain and snow Monday night. 

2. City offices, schools closed

Students at ,  and  in Farmington Hills, all have the day off, and administrative offices are closed. The  and  offices will be closed, as is the . Both the  and  branches of the U.S. Postal Service will be closed Monday, but you can use their Automated Postal Centers. 

3. Put out your trash

If Monday is your regular trash and recycling collection day, be sure to get those bags and bins out to the curb. Collection in Farmington and Farmington Hills is not affected by this holiday.

Today's Martin Luther King, Jr. Day commemoration starts with a 9:30 a.m. walk from , 28000 New Market Rd. (west of ) to the , 32737 W. 12 Mile Rd., with refreshments served in the library auditorium. The day's program starts at 10:15 a.m. and includes performances by the choir and dance troupe. Keynote speakers will be Margaret Mason, author of  These Hands, a children's book that retells the story of civil rights efforts at the Detroit Wonder Bread bakery, and Evege James, a former bakery employee.

During their regular meeting on Tuesday at 7 p.m., officials will consider a vote to .
