Demolition Starts on Four Farmington School Buildings Demolition Starts on Four Farmington School Buildings

The demolition of four (FPS) buildings started July 5, with Wooddale Elementary on Oak Forest Dr. in Farmington Hills.

In January, the four elementary schools closed in 2010, and Fairview Early Childhood Center, which was closed in 2006. , located at 14 Mile and Middlebelt Roads, to the Islamic Cultural Association.

The tentative dates for demolition to begin at each of the sites is:

  • Flanders Elementary School, 32600 Flanders, Farmington - July 20
  • Fairview Early Childhood Center, 28500 Oakcrest Dr., Farmington Hills - August 3
  • William Grace Elementary School, 29040 Shiawassee, Farmington Hills - August 17

For safety reasons, construction fencing around each of the sites has been installed.

The demolition contractors, as part of their bid for the job, are committed to salvaging desirable materials to be recycled. Once the buildings are demolished, their footprints will be filled with top soil and seeded. The playgrounds will remain on the sites.

The estimated cost of demolition for all five buildings was $900,000; however, officials expected some of that cost would be offset re-use of items like heating and cooling systems and cabinetry in the district's other buildings. The sale of Eagle Elementary is expected to net the district $1.1 million.
