Gill PTA Selects McKennett Scholarship Recipient

Grace Couture, a Gill alum, receives the $500 memorial award.

Gill PTA Selects McKennett Scholarship Recipient

Grace Couture has been selected by the PTA (Parent Teacher Association) as this year's recipient of the Megan and Michael McKennett Memorial Scholarship.

The $500 scholarship is awarded to a Gill alum attending (FHS), in memory of a brother and sister who were killed in a car accident. The recipient must demonstrate qualities and values upheld by the McKennetts: music, religion, art, sports and community service.

In an essay required as part of the scholarship application, Couture described Gill Elementary teacher Jon Vondrasek as being an important influence on her education and growth as an individual. "Mr. V" talked to her about her leadership abilities, and Couture never forgot those words of encouragement. She wrote that because of his influence, and that of all her wonderful teachers, she has gained confidence and the ability to pursue her goals.

Couture has been a member of the FHS National Honor Society since 2010. A member of the Farmington/Farmington Hills Mayors Youth Council for the last last four years, she has volunteered for many community organizations and with her church. She served as a Research Intern at the Karmanos Cancer Institute.

Couture's musical talents range from serving as Drum Major for the marching band to playing saxophone in the Jazz Band and the Clarinet Choir. She has participated in gymnastics, diving and has been on the varsity tennis team at FHS since her sophomore year.

AP biology teacher Jeff Dwyer said he finds Couture's hard work, determination and academic ability worthy of praise. Band director Michael Steele has worked with the graduate since her freshman year and describes her as a thoughtful student of high moral character, as well as a significant contributor to the musical programs at the school.

Couture plans to attend Grand Valley State University and pursue a career in physical therapy.
