A new charter school may be coming to Ferndale next fall started by a Walled Lake mother and elementary school teacher, according to a recent article in the Oakland Press.

Amy Niebert is planning to open the Great Lakes Anchor Academy on Woodward in Ferndale in the fall of 2013. The school, which would be the first parent-started school in Michigan, would open with 300 sixth graders and involves a partnership with the Naval Sea Cadets under the U.S. Navy, according to the article.

“We have an unbelievable amount of interest,” Niebert told the Oakland Press.

The school plans to stress discipline and respect for education, and students will be required to wear Sea Cadet uniforms. See the full Oakland Press article for more information. You can also visit the Great Lakes Anchor Academy web site here.
