residents are encouraged to attend a town hall meeting tonight regarding and research that has been on-going for at least several months.

Councilman Dan Schulte, who is the liaison to the committee studying the move, is hosting the meeting.

The biggest benefit the committee has unveiled so far is a savings in taxes for residents. In May, Schulte estimated the savings to be:

  • about $440 for a resident owning a home valued at $100,000 or
  • about $4,400 for a resident owning a home valued at $1 million

The council had originally voted to gather an advisory only vote from residents in the August primaries but found out afterward state elections officials do not allow advisory-only votes. The vote must be taking action.

Upon discovering that, , including answering the many questions residents may have about what a change from Wayne to Macomb counties may mean for services.

Any such eventual move would require the majority of votes from both Wayne and Macomb county residents--to allow Grosse Pointe Shores to succeed from Wayne County and to accept the city into Macomb County.

Councilman Bruce Bisballe questioned Tuesday during the council meeting whether Schulte knew of any petition being circulated to get the Wayne County vote on the ballot. Schulte declined any knowledge, saying he was not gathering signatures for such a petition and he was unaware whether any of the committee members were doing so.

The town hall meeting begins at 7 p.m. at the Grosse Pointe Shores city hall. It will be recorded and aired on the public access channel so those who cannot attend may get the same information as those who are able to attend.
