Members of the Grosse Pointe and law enforcement community gathered Wednesday at Grosse Pointe Unitarian Church for a memorial service for K-9 officer Raleigh.

More than a dozen K-9 handlers and their partners from across the region attended the ceremony which included testimonials from local officials, a presentation letters from elementary students in the Pointes by student Jack Reeber and a statement of appreciation by Sgt. Michael Almeranti, Raleigh's handler with the The City of Grosse Pointe Public Safety Department.

German Shepherd said Raleigh  died in November. He was born in the Czech Republic in 2004, and joined the department in 2005.

During his tenure, he received a number of recognitions and commendations including being named Officer of the Year in 2006, and in 2010 he received a department citation from Harper Woods for his assistance in the arrest of an armed robbery suspect.
