Grosse Pointe South, University Liggett Teachers Receive Honors

Two teachers—one from from Grosse Pointe South and one from University Liggett—recently received honors for their work in the classroom and beyond.

American History and Economics teacher Bruce Pelto has been named the 2012 Michigan Outstanding Teacher of American History by the Michigan Society of Daughters of the American Revolution.

Pelto competed for the award at a regional level and then was selected to be advanced to the state level. After winning at the state level, he will also be considered at the national level within the organization.

The Grosse Pointe Public School Board recognized Pelto for his award during their last board meeting. He has been teaching with Grosse Pointe Public Schools for the last 11 years but has been an educator for much longer.

Another teacher in the Pointes, Phillip Moss, who is the chair of 's Department of Creative and Performing Arts. He has been named the Michigan Education Theatre Association teacher of the year. He will receive an award in May at the Michigan Youth Arts Festival.

Moss teaches performing arts to students in grades six to 12 at University Liggett and directs theater productions by the students.

His award is based on "a record of advocacy for arts programs, dedication to bringing out the best in students and commitment to arts excellence."

Moss will receive a $250 grant as part of the award.
