Ferndale’s Torino Named Detroit Free Press 2014 Restaurant of the Year

Tornino, 201 E. 9 Mile Road in Ferndale, has been named the Detroit Free Press’s 2014 Restaurant of the Year.

Free Press restaurant critic Sylvia Rector credited chef Garrett Lipar, 26, with developing “an entirely new tasting menu of seven exquisite dishes, each one a small work of art and a seduction in flavor.”

“Using both modernist and classical cooking techniques as well as beautiful and unusual ingredients, he gives guests a dining experience unlike any in metro Detroit,” Rector continued. “Every plate, every night, is a study in texture, color, balance, flavor, detail and innovation”

Rector said the restaurant, which Lipar and owner Noah Dorfman opened in Dorfman’s coffee bar last year, “could hold its own anywhere in America.”

The restaurateurs say their culinary creativity is limited only by size and they’re looking for a bigger space, though they think the Ferndale location is ideal. Their ultimate goal is to become the best restaurant in Michigan.

Lipar grew up in Waterford and Dorfman in Bloomfield Hills.
