A downtown Rochester block was evacuated late Thursday night after a car drove into a natural gas meter in an alley behind Main Street. 

According to assistant Rochester Fire Chief Tom Czerwinski, a call came into the around 10 p.m. from a person who said he smelled gas in the alley. A car had driven into a meter there and then drove off.

The fire department shut off the gas and evacuated the block between Fourth Street and University Drive west of Main Street. , and were evacuated; the other businesses were closed for the night, Czerwinski said.

There were no injuries, and the gas line was repaired.
