Residents east of Letica must boil drinking or cooking water for the next 48 hours after water main break on 24 Mile Road.

Rochester's East Side Under 'Boil Water' Order for Next 2 Days Rochester's East Side Under 'Boil Water' Order for Next 2 Days

A water main break in Shelby Township on Tuesday afternoon forced the city of Rochester to issue a boil water notice for the city's east side for at least the next 48 hours, city officials said.

A 36-inch water main on 24 Mile Road between Schoenherr and Jewel roads broke just before noon Tuesday; shortly after, residents of Rochester's east side began reporting low water pressure, said City Manager Jaymes Vettraino.

The water pressure has been restored, and crews are working to repair the break. But because there is a risk for contaminants to siphon their way back into a water distribution system when that system loses pressure, public health officials advise residents to boil the water until a water test is performed.

The boil water order affects those living east of Letica Drive, including Village Green Apartments and Churchill Circle.

The boil water order does not affect any of the downtown restaurants or other businesses.

If you are affected by the boil water order, here's what you need to know:

  • Vigorously boil water for five minutes before using it for drinking or cooking.
  • If you can't boil the water, use bottled water.
  • If you need help, or if you need bottled water, contact the Rochester Fire Department at 248-651-4470. The department has a supply of bottled water for those in need.
  • After 48 hours, check with Rochester Patch, the city's website or on Channel 10 (WOW) or Channel 17 (Comcast) to see if the boil water order has been lifted.

A boil water order has also been issued for Shelby Township residents.
