Michigan Trooper Injured When Struck By His Own Vehicle: Police

HAZEL PARK, MI – Michigan State Police said one of its troopers received minor injuries when he was struck by his own vehicle when it was rear-ended by another vehicle merging onto Interstate 75 near Nine Mile Road early Sunday morning.

Two other people were injured, one them seriously, when the merging vehicle rolled over the police cruiser about 1:30 a.m. Sunday, according to a news release.

The trooper had pulled over a male motorist for an outstanding warrant, and the merging motorist — traveling “at a high rate of speed,” police said — drove over the shoulder and struck the police car from the back and rolled over it, the release said.

The motorist who had been pulled over was seated in the front car of the trooper’s vehicle, and his female passenger was standing alongside the vehicle that had been pulled over. She was also struck by the rolling police car, and was seriously injured, according to the report.

The trooper was also standing outside his cruiser when he was struck, police said.

All three — the trooper, the arrested man and his passenger — were taken to a local hospital for treatment. The trooper was treated and released, the arrested man is in good condition and the passenger is in serious condition, according to the release.

The male driver who allegedly caused the crash was not injured, and his female passenger was treated for minor injuries, the MSP said. It’s unclear if he will face charges.

The north side of I-75 and Nine Mile was closed for several hours in the Hazel Park area, but has since reopened.
