One More Thing for the Shopping List: A Good Deed

One More Thing for the Shopping List: A Good Deed

Shoppers often can be tempted by an impulse purchase at the checkout line. Perhaps by some candy or a magazine before the final tally is totaled.

Beginning Feb. 19 VG’s shoppers can perform a charitable act at the checkout by opting to donate to Macomb County Habitat for Humanity. The fundraiser continues through March 10.

All of Spartan Stores’ corporately owned Michigan locations are participating, including two in Macomb County: VG’s Food Center at 40832 Ryan, Sterling Heights, and VG's Food Center at 50820 Schoenherr, Shelby Township. This is the fifth year Spartan Stores have held the fundraiser, and it’s the third year easter Michigan VG’s stores have taken part.

To donate, shoppers can buy a $1, $5 or $10 medallion at the check-out. The donation will register on the store receipt, which the donor can save for tax purposes.

Money raised will directly benefit Macomb County Habitat for Humanity, which will use it to buy supplies for local home building and renovation projects. In the last year, MCHFH has built or rehabilitated 24 houses, and since 1993 its has helped more than 98 families with home ownership.

“We say thank you to Spartan Stores and to the many, many Spartan Store shoppers for their continued generosity. We are pleased that we will be able to partner with the VG’s stores and their customers to reduce substandard housing in Macomb County” says Sanaa Elias, Volunteer Manager for Macomb County Habitat for Humanity.

“Families chosen to become Habitat homeowners agree to perform hundreds of hours of sweat equity,” Elias says. “When the home is completed, they purchase the home with a zero percent interest mortgage.”

Generous shoppers will also receive four in-store coupons from Spartan Stores as a thank-you for making a donation.
