Golfing in January may be normal in Arizona, California and other southern states, but in Michigan?
"It's really nice!" Troy resident Lawrence Wu said as he pulled a putter out of his golf bag Friday afternoon at Sylvan Glen Golf Course in Troy. "I don't remember playing golf in January. Ever."
Wu, along with more than 100 other golfers, made his way to the public golf course Friday after temperatures started climbing well above the average high of 30 degrees. By early afternoon, the temperature had reached 53 degrees in Troy – just four degrees shy of the record high set in 1998.
"It's great," Shelby Township resident Bob Kronner said, tearing open a bag of tees by the clubhouse. "I woke up this morning hoping my boss would ask me to go golfing."
Kronner, who works as an IT consultant for Venteon, added, "I have a good boss."
Ken Kania, who owns , also showed up for a round of golf with a friend after lunch.
"It's January sixth and sunny and 53 degrees, and I didn't feel like working any more," he said.
Sylvan Glen Golf Course is one of the only courses in the county that is open year-round as long as the course is playable, said general manager Don Tillar, Jr. Visit the golf course's website for more information and to book a tee time.
