Police: Drag Racing Drunken Driver Fails to Stop for Officer

A Troy Police officer on patrol just after 1 a.m. on Wednesday observed two vehicles quickly accelerate, squeal their tires and begin to drag race near Crooks Road and South Boulevard.

According to a media release from the Troy Police Department, one of the drivers saw the officer's patrol vehicle and immediately slowed down. The other continued to travel at a high rate of speed before turning onto a residential street.

The officer turned on his emergency lights and followed the speeding vehicle, which failed to pull over as it continued to drive through the residential neighborhood. The driver eventually stopped and parked in front of a home on another street.

When the officer asked the driver, a 28-year-old Rochester Hills man, why he didn't stop, he told police, "I was trying to make it home," according to the report.

An investigation revealed the man was intoxicated; he was arrested and later charged with fleeing and eluding a police officer and operating while intoxicated. The man, whose preliminary breath test results were 0.08 percent, has one previous drunken driving conviction.
