Troy Mayor Janice Daniels after an anti-gay status update she posted on her Facebook page in June went viral Friday afternoon. The post reads:

"I think I am going to throw away my I Love New York carrying bag now that queers can get married there."

In several interviews with other news organizations – and in a comment posted by Daniels on Troy Patch – Daniels confirmed posting the status update to her page and defended the statement.

"I firmly support marriage as being defined as between one man and one woman and I am not going to change my position," Daniels commented in part. "That said, I love all people and will continue to work towards promoting a vibrant City of Troy."

The story, which was originally posted on , was quickly picked up nationally and drew hundreds of comments, tweets and Facebook messages Friday evening – many of which called for action.

"Not only (is) an apology is due, I believe that positions such as a city official should not be held by ignorant/homophobic/sexist/racist/ill-mannered people," Lucy Beatty wrote on Troy Patch's Facebook page.

"Troy is a large, important, diverse community and she needs to apologize to the citizens of Troy, including its gay residents, as well as the visitors, employees, and businesses in the city," Oakland County Commissioner Craig Covey commented on the Troy Patch Facebook page. "Then she needs to apologize to the entire region."

"Mayor Janice Daniels needs to be removed from office as soon as possible," Valdet Selimaj wrote on Troy Patch's Facebook Page. "There is a large homosexual community within Troy and we will remember this for the next election."

"Can she be recalled?" @techiegrrl tweeted on Friday. "So not cool!!"
