Lady Eagles Bounce Mavericks, 46-40

Lakeland beats Milford in KLAA crossover game heading into holiday break.

The bounced cross town rival Milford 46-40 Thursday night on the road.

Sophomore guard Dominique Zigo had a career night for Lakeland with a game-high 19 points. She hit from three-point range, made three straight free throws after getting fouled just before half and scored on two break away lay-ups.

Zigo was very excited with her effort. “I wanted to win this rivalry game," she said. "That’s important. Our team is working better together.”

After the Eagles jumped off to a quick 7-0 lead early in the game, Milford stormed back to tie the score at 7. The teams traded leads during the second quarter with the Eagles taking a 20-19 lead into the lockerroom at half.

Lakeland scored six quick points in the third quarter to take command. Zigo hit a three-pointer to give the Eagles a 33-28 lead as the third quarter ended. The Mavericks fought back in the fourth quarter, thanks to a strong effort by senior guard Claire Slaughter and Paige Smith. The Eagles hit some free throws down the stretch for a 46-40 win.

Coach Mike Head was pleased with the way the team is playing better together. “I think we had some great minutes from everybody on the team. We showed some toughness and resolve at the end of the game.”

He went on to say, “We made a number of unselfish plays."

Marlayna Malvich and Jessie Clink chipped in with seven each for Lakeland.

Claire Slaughter had a game-high 16 points for the Mavericks.

With the win, Lakeland ups its record to 2-4 heading into the holiday break. The Eagles resume action at home with a game against Waterford Mott on Jan. 6.
