For the second consecutive year, the Wyandotte Roosevelt marching band is headed to the Michigan Competing Bands Association state finals at Ford Field.

The competition takes place Saturday and the Wyandotte Marching Chiefs are scheduled to perform at 5 p.m.

To qualify for the finals, the band had strong finishes this year at MCBA sanctioned events in West Bloomfield, Clarkston and Woodhaven.

With an average score of 70.775, the Marching Chiefs earned the 10th seed in their class, which is Flight II.

MCBA divides high school bands into four flights, based on the enrollment at each school. The top 12 bands in each flight earn the right to compete at state finals, based on performance in at least two prior MCBA sanctioned events that season.

Last year the band also entered the state finals with the 10th seed, which was the first time in school history that Wyandotte qualified for the finals. The Marching Chiefs finished the day in 10th place at the 2011 state finals.

Mark D’Angelo, who is Roosevelt’s instrumental music director, said that after the making it to Ford Field in 2011, the band is happy to have reached that goal again.

“We’re all very excited about it,” D’Angelo said. “The seniors this year, all season long, we’re talking about how exciting it was, and they wanted to get a chance to do it again.”

This season, the band will be performing the show Stained Glass, which includes Mass in B minor: Kyrie Eleison by Johann Sebastian Bach and selections from Mozarts’s Requiem.

Ticket prices for the Saturday’s show at Ford Field are $16 for adults and $12 for students and seniors. Children younger than 5 years old receive free admission.

The ticket office opens at 7 a.m. and the competition begins with the first band scheduled to play at 8:15 a.m.
