Fierce Facial Hair for a Cause: The South Metro Celebrates Movember

Flummoxed by the apparent increase in handlebars, chevrons and scraggly 'staches? Find out what Movember is all about.

Fierce Facial Hair for a Cause: The South Metro Celebrates Movember

Perhaps you've noticed it—a dusting of hair across a co-worker's lip that wasn't there before, a persistent five o'clock shadow that is well on its way to Happy Hour. Maybe even a full-on crumb catcher that only Tom Selleck could love.

It's no accident. Starting Nov. 1, the South Metro became home to a multitude of moustaches, where dozens of men have signed up for Movember, an initiative that asks men to go hirsute to raise awareness and funds for men's health issues, particularly prostate and testicular cancer initiatives.

Here's how it works: All participants start the month clean shaven, then for the rest of the month they try their best to cultivate a respectable 'stache and pick up sponsors. Donations go to  Prostate Cancer FoundationLIVESTRONG FoundationAwareness & Education and  Global Action Plan. The effort culminates in a series of parties at the end of the month.

Movember began in Melbourne, Australia, but quickly spread throughout the world. In 2011, about 854,000 people signed on worldwide, raising $126.3 million USD.

This year, the South Metro has gotten in on the action (if you're already involved, show us your 'stache by uploading a pic to this article). Each major city in Dakota County has at least three teams participating and several bars and restaurants will be hosting galas in their honor.

Here are some upcoming Movember events:
