Fate has dealt another blow to superstar skier Lindsey Vonn, who wiped out on the opening day of the FIS Alpine Ski World Championships in Schladming, Austria.

The four-time World Cup champion was midway through the course when she crashed, losing her skis in the process. According to a release from the U.S. Ski Team, Vonn suffered a  torn ACL and MCL in her right knee and a lateral tibial plateau fracture. Vonn was airlifted from the course via helicopter to a nearby hospital.

She has been released from the hospital's care. Vonn will not be able to compete for the rest of the season. It is anticipated that she will return for the 2013-14 Audi FIS World Cup season and the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi.

The crash is just the latest misfortune to befall Vonn, who has struggled with persistent illness as of late. In November, Vonn was admitted to the hospital in Colorado after complaining of a mysterious pain that pervaded her body and left an aching sensation in her bones.
