Eagan Mayor Mike Maguire declared television sensation Nicholas Mrozinski "The Voice of Eagan" at an emotionally charged homecoming performance at the Mall of America on Thursday.

Nicholas Mrozinski, better known on NBC's "The Voice" as Nicholas David, is one of the Top 4 contestants on the televised singing competition. Mrozinski flew back from Los Angeles on Thursday for a brief visit with his family and to conduct some filming for the show in his hometown. On Thursday evening, he'll return to California for continued filming.

Greeted by hundreds of fans, Mrozinski took the stage to perform "Stand By Me" and "What's Going On" and be honored by Maguire, who also gave the artist a golden microphone. Maguire was joined on stage by Eagan High School Principal Dr. Polly Reikowski, who gave Mrozinski a Eagan Wildcats t-shirt. Mrozinski grew up in Eagan and graduated from Eagan High School.

Plenty of friends, family and fans from Eagan made an appearance at the free concert on Thursday, including Minneapolis resident Jason Fladager, who used to play with Mrozinski in festivals and other venues.

"I'm so happy for him, that this is happening to him, but I'm also happy for everybody else, that everybody else gets to hear it," Fladager said. "He really deserves it, just because of the kind of person he is, he's very humble and down to earth."

"Whereas the community of Eagan is proud to have native son Nicholas David Mrozinski represent our city on 'The Voice ... Now therefore be it resolved that we, the Eagan City Council, designate Nicholas David Mrozinski as the voice of Eagan and a wonderful asset to our community," Maguire said just prior to the performance.

Nicholas himself seemed to feel the outpouring of support from the crowd, at one point remarking "This is un-freakin'-real," during the show.
