Simley Sports Recap: Volleyball, Boys & Girls Soccer

Tuesday night saw plenty of sports action for Simley teams.

Some fared well and are moving on in their respective seasons, others had off nights and are looking to rebuild for next season.

BOYS SOCCER

After finishing fourth in the Classic Suburban Conference with a record of 5-3-2, Peter Bourland's Simley boys soccer team continued its run through the section playoffs with a 1-0 win over Mahtomedi Tuesday night.

The win advances the Simley boys to the Section 4A final versus St. Paul Como Park on Thursday night. Como Park cruised through the St. Paul City Conference this year with a record of 11-1-0.

A win Thursday night puts the Spartans into the Class A State Tournament.

GIRLS SOCCER

Cassie Husemann's girls team ran into a buzz saw disguised as the South St. Paul soccer team Tuesday night, falling 9-0 to the Packers in the third round of the Section 4A playoffs.

The loss ended the season for the Lady Spartans.

The Packers move on to face New Life Academy in the section final game Thursday night. The winner moves on to the Class A State Tournament.

VOLLEYBALL

Mark Kaschke's Spartan volleyball team finished the Classic Suburban Conference regular season in third place (9-4-0) after beating Richfield in three sets Tuesday night.

Strong all-around play from senior Roda Mena and sophomore serving ace Emily Verway helped the Spartans secure the victory (28-26, 25-18, 16-16, 26-24).

Section 3AAA playoffs begin Oct. 23. Section seeds have not yet been released.
