The sale of a sprawling Lake Minnetonka home to Vikings quarterback Christian Ponder has officially closed, and the 24-year-old has been spotted several times over the last few weeks in the Spring Park and Excelsior areas getting to know his new neighbors.
Ponder’s home is located in an upscale neighborhood of what is technically Tonka Bay. The home was built in 2001, according to Hennepin County records, and Ponder paid $880,000 for the property. The asking price had been $995,000. The estate includes eight bathrooms, five bedrooms, a gazebo, dock and sports court.
The home’s estimated tax value is more than $1.4 million, and Ponder will pay just under $20,000 in annual property taxes.
The Minneapolis St. Paul Business Journal reported last week that Ponder purchased the home from Xcel Energy’s CEO Benjamin Fowke III—who relocated down the street to a home previously owned by TCF Financial CEO William Cooper.
Homes in the gated Clay Cliffe neighborhood on the northern shore of Lake Minnetonka range in price from about $1 million to more than $5 million. Another home currently up for sale in the neighborhood is listed for more than $1.8 million
Ponder is just the latest professional athlete to call Lake Minnetonka home.
, who just inked a deal worth more than $90 million with the Minnesota Wild, purchased a home on the lake earlier this year, and of the New Jersey Nets has lived in Mound for the last several years.
Other sports stars that either live on Lake Minnetonka or did so at one time include Kevin Garnett, Minnesota Twins owner Bill Pohlad and Ben Lieber.
