In its fifth year, organizers are looking for entries to the Maple Grove Days 40 Winks Bed Race.

The annual event during the city festival benefits Slumberland Furniture’s 40 Winks Foundation. This year, the is hoping to increase donations to top the $4,800 and 32 beds and sheets donated to last year.

The businesses, organizations and individuals are invited to participate in teams of five people - four people pushing the bed, one person riding. The $150 team entry fee will go towards a purchase of a bed that will be donated to C.R.O.S.S.  Bed racers can also collect pledges. Applications can be found on the Maple Grove Days website: www.maplegrovedays.org.

“We feel this would be a great way to involve the community to have fun and help children in Maple Grove. The Maple Grove Rotary made the decision to help organize and run the bed race because we know there is a need to provide beds for children. The Maple Grove Rotarian’s mission is to encourage and foster service in our community, and this is a great way to do it,” said Tom Anderson, Maple Grove Rotarian, said in a press release.

The Slumberland’s 40 Winks Foundation seeks to provide mattresses and beds to children and families lacking these resources to help them attain one.

“The 40 Winks Foundation was created so the public can participate by donating monetarily to helping children get off the floor at night. One hundred percent of the proceeds donated go back into the community as beds to people in need, said 40 Winks Foundation Representative Lorrie Link.

The Maple Grove Days 40 Winks Bed is 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. July 14 on Main Street in front of .

“This is the fifth year we’ve had the bed races and we’re happy that the Rotary will help run this event.  We’re excited to have the bed races and at the same time it will benefit children without beds,” said MGCO President Deb Syhre.  “The 40 Winks Foundation will be donating all mattress sets from the race to C.R.O.S.S., a local charity.”
