Opinion: December 21, 2012 - Is It Really the End of the World?

Opinion - Do you think the world is coming to an end worldwide and in Maple Grove or is it just a hoax? Share your thoughts (along with other Twin Cities residents) about the theories and predictions calling Friday, Dec. 21, 2012 the apocalypse.

Opinion: December 21, 2012 - Is It Really the End of the World? Opinion: December 21, 2012 - Is It Really the End of the World?

One of the best comments I received this week came from my Maple Grove-based chiropractor on Wednesday.

“Well, if Friday is the end of the world, it was nice knowing you,” he said with smile.

The ending of the Mayan calendar, Nostradamus and supposed space catastrophe are behind some of the theories and predictions calling Dec. 21, 2012 the end of the world.

While most of us (I believe) don’t think Friday will be the Mayan apocalypse/end of the world – it hasn’t stopped people from sharing their predictions and end of the world “what if” scenario.

One Twin Cities Patch editor shared "5 Things To Do In SW Minneapolis Before The World Ends Friday" with his readers.

On Thursday, Twin Cities media personality Jason Matheson  commented about it on Twitter:

If this really is our final 24 hrs - I'm gonna: get married, buy Southfork, eat a ton of Chinese food, hug a monkey and call my mom. #Bye :)

Don Reeder, who writes about city issues and legislative policy for League of Minnesota Cities, wrote on Twitter

I don't believe that the world will end tomorrow, but one could certainly argue that it has jumped-the-shark.

NASA has even weighed in on the collective Doomsday prophecies, according to an LA Times article:

The world will not end in 2012. Our planet has been getting along just fine for more than 4 billion years, and credible scientists worldwide know of no threat associated with 2012.

As for me, well, I’m siding with NASA on this one. And, the fact that most religious organizations in Maple Grove have continued to plan their services for the rest of December.

But, I can’t help but think – what would I do if I knew the world was coming to an end? As long as I was with my family, I think I’d be content while I finished off a pineapple-topped pizza, side of eggnog and a pile of chocolate.
