Simley Holds Off Henry Sibley In Homecoming Tilt

Visiting Simley grabbed a 12-0 lead and then held off a fourth-quarter rally by the Henry Sibley Warriors to take a 12-7 win in Homecoming contest


Visiting Simley rained on Henry Sibley’s Homecoming parade Friday night, getting past the host Warriors in a hard-fought game,12-7.

Simley senior quarterback Nick Wanzek scored on two-short runs and the Spartans turned back a late Henry Sibley rally to earn the win.

Henry Sibley fell to 2-4 in the Classic Suburban Conference and on the season.

Simley improved to 2-3 in the conference and evened its season record at 3-3.

Wanzek scored on a 1-yard gain with just 54.4 to play in the second quarter to give Simley a 6-0 lead. The extra point kick failed.

Simley scored again in the third period on a 4-yard run by Wanzek for a 12-0 lead. Simley went for two on the conversion run but was stopped by the Warriors defense.

Henry Sibley finally got on the scoreboard late in the fourth quarter. Senior wide receiver Noah Nelson caught a 24-yard scoring strike from senior quarterback Jackson Eskierka with 2:04 to play. The PAT was good and the Warriors trailed by less than a touchdown.

The Warriors got the football back at midfield with less than a minute left, but couldn’t mount a final drive.

The Homecoming events began with a parade starting at St. Stephen’s church followed by the football game at Matson Field.

Laura Rice was named Homecoming Queen and was Fawaz Rabiu the Homecoming King. Others in the Homecoming court were: Nick Golberg, Paloma Godina, Nicole Engel, Hannah Kulus, Joe Lane, Sydney Larsen, Eric Lauwagie, Ben Sather, Connor O'Leary and Natalie Osendorf.

The Henry Sibley High School dance team and marching band performed during the halftime show.

Henry Sibley will play at Richfield on Friday. Simley will host South St. Paul on Friday.
