Taking over a retail space formerly home to a Circuit City electronics store, Planet Fitness debuts Friday (Dec. 28) in Roseville.

The new health club will be open today (Thursday) for tours and membership registrations and then workouts on Friday (Dec. 28), according to Kevin Murphy, a co-owner of the new Planet Fitness in Roseville.

New Hampshire-based fitness center company is occupying 25,000 square feet adjacent to neighboring Sports Authority in a small shopping district that is just south of Highway 36 and east of Fairview Avenue.

Murphy said the club finished installing its equipment this past Saturday, noting, "The space has really come together and it looks great."

Founded in the early 1990s,  Planet Fitness touts itself as a basic health club operator, providing a wide array of exercise equipment but without the added cost of such things as juice bars and childcare.

Planet Fitness also pitches its facilities as places where ordinary people can go to exercise in its "Judgement Free Zone, which "means members can relax, get in shape, and have fun without being subjected to the hard-core, look-at-me attitude that exists in too many gyms."

"We focus more on general fitness," Murphy told Roseville Patch. "In fact, many of our typical members are first time gym users who have been intimidated by the "look at me" attitude that exists in other gyms.

"What other gym has a pizza night and bagel morning and offers its members free Tootsie Rolls after a workout?," Murphy added.

Special pricing until the end of January

Meanwhile, the new Planet Fitness will be offering special pricing until the end of January, Murphy said.

The Grand Opening special is a special monthly membership for just $1 down and $10/month with no minimum term.  The club will also offer a Black Card Membership for $0 down and $19.99/month.

Murphy said: "The Black Card does have a 12 month term but comes with extra benefits like unlimited use of our tanning and massage beds and chairs, the use of any of the 600 PF locations nationwide, the ability to bring a guest for free every time you come to the club and half price off cooler drinks.  Both of our memberships come with a T-Shirt and unlimited fitness training!

We offer this unlimited fitness training in small group classes to enable our members to get the most out of their memberships."

With Planet Fitness taking the space that has been vacant since Circuit City's shuttering in 2009, Roseville will no longer have any significant large empty retail spaces, Roseville Community Development Director Pat Trudgeon said recently.

The Roseville fitness center is company's third Twin Clities location. Currently, it has health clubs in Bloomington and Brooklyn Park.)
