Charanga Tropical, a diverse, nine-member salsa ensemble with musicians from all over the Americas, will join Twin Cities-based Cultural Jambalaya at its annual fundraising event at 6:30 p.m., Thursday, October 24, 2013 at the Calhoun Beach Club in Minneapolis.
The event, “Destination Next” presented by Delta Air Lines, will celebrate Cultural Jambalaya’s award-winning educational “Windows & Mirrors” DVD series and will include a "sneak peek" of its next DVD project focusing on Latin America. Cultural Jambalaya, whose work has earned national recognition for excellence in cultural education, is a nonprofit that uses international photography to promote understanding and respect for all people.
Produced by Twin Cities-based Tremendous! Entertainment, Cultural Jambalaya’s “Windows & Mirrors” is a one-of-a-kind educational DVD series for teachers featuring images and narratives from across the globe. Supported by online study guides, the DVDs are a resource for middle and high school teachers aimed at promoting cultural understanding and acceptance through a variety of subjects, including social studies, geography, history, diversity and language. Cultural Jambalaya is now streaming without charge its award-winning cultural educational videos at www.CulturalJam.org.
Rich in harmony and melody, Charanga Tropical is a highly acclaimed ensemble that performs classic and modern salsa music. The nine-piece group specializes in the unique Cuban "charanga" style -- salsa with strings, no brass and plenty of percussion. With musicians from throughout the Americas, the band members’ accomplishments include international tours, platinum recordings and multiple Latin Grammy nominations. The evening will also feature dance performance and instruction by Rene Thompson, former principal dancer at La Tropicana in Havana, Cuba.
Charanga Tropical’s appearance is sponsored by Gold sponsor Tremendous! Entertainment. Silver sponsors include Wells Fargo, Wells Fargo Advisors, Robins, Kaplan Miller & Ciresi, Carlson Companies, Great Clips, Tom & Marlene Kayser and Video Guidance; Bronze sponsors include DS&B; and in-kind sponsors include Colle+McVoy, Hi-Fly'n Productions, D’Amico Catering and Kraus-Anderson Companies.
