Lake Harriet Thief Uses Stolen Phone For Sex Ads

A roundup of crimes and incidents reported to the Minneapolis Police Department on Oct. 2 and 3.

Lake Harriet Thief Uses Stolen Phone For Sex Ads

A Minneapolis resident enjoying an early-morning run around the lakes on Wednesday came back to his car to find himself the victim of theft.

Before leaving the car at the Lake Harriet Bandshell at 7:30 a.m., the victim had locked his wallet and iPhone inside his car’s glove box, and left his gym bag on the car seat. On his return two hours later, the victim discovered his window smashed, glove box pried open, and his possessions missing. In a report he filed with the Minneapolis Police Department, he alleged that his running partner’s car window had also been smashed.

According to the victim, his bankcard was used several times during the day, and the phone was used to reply to as many as 10 sex ads on Craigslist for men seeking sex with other men. In his report, victim claimed to “have the emails,” but did not specify whether or not the thief used the victim’s email account to arrange any amorous rendezvous.

A driver on the 4500 block of Nicollet Avenue South called police to ask for help in removing her boyfriend from the car. According to the victim, the boyfriend had made threats to her. The driver’s boyfriend was booked into the Hennepin County Jail “to be on the safe side,” the police report said.

Officers pulled over a cyclist on the 1800 block of West 49th Street close to midnight for riding without lights or reflectors. As the cyclist was sweating and “seemed nervous,” officers asked if they could search his backpack. Inside, they found three syringe needles, and searched the man’s person as they suspected he had more drugs in his pockets. Officers found a small container of marijuana and a packet of rolling papers. The man was cited for possession of drug paraphernalia and released.

A motorcyclist on West Calhoun Parkway was cited for driving without current insurance after he was pulled over for having expired tabs on his license plate.

A resident of the 5000 block of Queen Avenue South reported his lawn sign had been stolen overnight. Two days previous, he had found it wrapped in toilet paper, but assumed it had been vandalized in conjunction with the “teepeeing” of a house on the same block.

A 14-year old student at Southwest High School reported that a 15-year old student had broken into her locker during gym class. Police arrested the 15-year old, who returned the stolen property to the victim after officers asked her to.
