Open houses present new duel immersion learning to community

Risen Christ Catholic School (RCCS), a 320-student, K-8 grade school located in the Powderhorn Park area of Minneapolis, is the first duel immersion Catholic school in Minnesota.  The program is an innovative school model that delivers the classroom curriculum in two languages, English and Spanish.  To introduce the benefits of the program to the community, RCCS will hold open houses on February 18-19 and April 8 to demonstrate how dual immersion teaching builds cultural competency and prepares students as tomorrow’s leaders.

“Risen Christ has made great strides in diminishing the achievement gap of our students who come to us two years behind their middle class peers,” said Liz Ramsey, principal of RCCS, an inner-city school where 77 percent of its students are Latino.  “Two-way immersion not only helps to enable our students to erase the achievement gap, but to excel in their academics and in life.”

Two-way immersion school models have been nationally recognized as the most effective approach to bilingual education.  At RCCS, classes will mix native English speaking students with peers who speak Spanish, allowing both groups of students to become bilingual.  Two-way immersion schools prepare all students to be bilingual and biliterate in an increasingly diverse world, while deeply respecting the languages, identities, and cultures of all students.

“The need for citizens to be bilingual is increasing in demand in the global workplace,” said Ramsey.  “Bilingual graduates have an advantage as they apply to college and eventually, professional careers.”

The program will be presented at RCCS’s open houses:

Tuesday, Feb. 18 - 6:00-7:30 p.m.

Wednesday, Feb 19 -10:30-11:30 a.m. and 2:00-3:00 p.m.,

Tuesday, April 8 - 6:00-7:30 p.m.

RCCS ( www.risenchristschool.org) is located at 1120 E 37th St, Minneapolis.  For information about the open houses or RCCS’s duel immersion program, contact Liz Ramsey at lramsey@risenchristschool.org or 612-822-5329.
