Risking Their Neck For One Last Taste Of Winter

That's one audacious sailor!

Risking Their Neck For One Last Taste Of Winter

The Hennepin County Sheriff's office may have sent out a thin ice warning on Friday, but that didn't seem to stop these sailors on Saturday morning at Lake Calhoun. Riding a small ice boat, one of them ventured far out into the middle of the lake, even as runners around the work were shedding everything but the skimpiest athletic apparel. When Patch spotted them, they were too far away from shore to interview safely, but one can only assume that they wanted one last taste of winter before the ice completely melts.

If you do venture onto the ice today, the Hennepin County Sheriff is urging you to follow these safety guidelines:

  • Anyone who plans to venture onto the ice with recreational vehicles, such as snowmobiles and ATVs, should beaware that this activity involves an increased level of risk at this time.
  • Four inches of ice is the recommended minimum thickness for walking and small group activities on ice. No iceshould ever be considered safe.
  • Remember to keep your dog on a leash this time of year. The Sheriff’s Office has responded to incidents involving petowners who put themselves in jeopardy chasing after a dog that wandered onto the ice.
