SLP High Principal Robert Metz Selected as New Superintendent

A familiar face is set to take the helm of St. Louis Park Public Schools later this summer, as SLP High School Principal Robert Metz has been selected to serve as the district's next superintendent.

Metz was one of three finalists who took part in all-day interviews earlier this week, alongside Dr. Efe Agbamu, executive director of the Office of Multilingual Learning with St. Paul Public Schools, and Dr. Nancy Rajanen, superintendent of Waconia Public Schools.

The School Board unanimously selected Metz as its new superintendent on Thursday, May 9, and agreed to begin contract negotiations. Metz will replace ublic Schools for nine years.

“In Rob we welcome a seasoned leader with years of experience in our schools and the St. Louis Park community," School Board Chair Bruce Richardson said. "He has the skills and experience as well as the student, parent and staff support to move our schools and district to the next level of excellence."

Metz had served as principal of St. Louis Park High School for the past six years. During his tenure, the school had consistently rated among the top in Minnesota and has implemented International Baccalaureate, Advanced Placement and Spanish Immersion programs, along with a new academy learning structure extending from the federal Investing in Innovation (i3) grant.

Prior to that, Metz served as principal of Aquila Elementary School for nine years. The school received a "Beating the Odds" award through the Minnesota Department of Education (MDE) under Metz, while making progress toward closing the achievement gap.

Metz has more than 30 years of public education experience, with a Master's degree in Curriculum and Instruction. The district is now involved in contract negotiations with Metz, with School Board action tentatively expected at the group's May 28 meeting. Metz would then assume the duties of superintendent on July 1.
