BRIEF: Free Doughnuts to Round Out Friday

Falling between Memorial Day and the 4th of July, sweets-lovers around Ellisville and the U.S. on Friday are embracing a different sort of holiday.

BRIEF: Free Doughnuts to Round Out Friday

Homer Simpson doesn't have a favorite holiday, but if he did, it surely would be this: Friday marks National Doughnut Day, when sellers of those small, sweet circles, including in Ellisville, offer special deals in commemoration of the baked-good's American history.

"It's been really, really good. today," said Ann Mahler, owner of The Donut Palace, which is offering one free donut per customer all day. "We've actually had a long line all morning, non-stop, which is great."

According to HolidayInsights.com, National Doughnut Day dates back to World War I, when women from the Salvation Army travelled abroad to make homesick soldiers baked goods and other treats, sometimes even using the inside of their metal helmets to heat the oil used to cook doughnuts.
