Bill Otto, candidate for the Democratic nomination in the new 70th District and St. Charles resident, swung through Chesterfield's most recent City Council meeting. Otto introduced himself to councilmembers as a nice guy and willing to work together.

Otto, 56, is a former air traffic controller and three-term councilman in the city of Bridgeton over 14 years, until he lost his house to expansion in 1999 at St. Louis-Lambert International Airport.

Otto and his wife Kathy subsequently moved to St. Charles and he serves on the Board of Adjustment, he said. Otto coached youth sports for St. Lawrence Catholic Church, he said, and was a Boys Scout leader at Arlington United Methodist Church.

Otto said he served two years in the U.S. Navy.

Eugene Dokes, 29, of St. Peters and GOP Party chair there, is in the primary race for the Republican nomination for the 70th District seat. He's in real estate.

Otto said he doesn't yet live in the newly-formed 70th District, but under law has time to move into it, if elected.

Dokes, from Hazelwood, does not live in the new 70th District either, according to stltoday.com in a recent article.

Otto believes he can win in November, despite West County's typically Republican leanings.

"Chesterfield has its Democrats," Otto said.

The primary election for statewide office is August 7, with the general election November 6.
