St. Louis Mayor Francis Slay has proclaimed Friday January 20 as Teri Griege Day in the city.

Griege is a Creve Coeur resident who has continued on with her passion for fitness by participating in marathons around the country despite treatment for a Stage 4 colon cancer diagnosis.

Griege was also invited to participate in the Ironman World Championship triathalon as a featured athlete in October. Her story of strength and perseverance was chronicled during the broadcast, which aired on NBC in December. It included footage of her training in St. Louis.

A fellow triathalete, Tom Irwin, was with Griege in Louisville back in 2009 during a triathalon that saw Griege finish well off her previous pace. Only a few weeks later, she received the cancer diagnosis. Irwin is also the Executive Director of Civic Progress. He mentioned Griege's story, and the images of Griege running near the St. Louis Arch which aired on the NBC broadcast to Mayor Slay, which helped lead to Friday's honor.

A 10 a.m. ceremony was planned for Friday.
