The phrase is too often used to the point that it sounds like a cliche, but on Tuesday, a playing field served as something of a sanctuary in Creve Coeur, as friends and family on the field and in the stands came together to remember Clayton Pfeiffer.

Pfeiffer, 18, and a freshman infielder on the Baseball team,

Prior to the start of the game, the team stood along the first base line as a moment of silence was observed. Many of the players had Pfeiffer's uniform number 4 written on their shoes. Some in the crowd had it on their hats. Shirts handed out to the crowd had his initials and a blue ribbon. Sophomore Nathan Utt led participants in prayer, noting that the team had pledged to play in Pfeiffer's honor.

The Spartans broke out to an early lead, and in almost poetic fashion, scored a fourth run in the bottom of the fourth to take a 4-1 lead over the visiting Bees, just as the sun poked through the early afternoon clouds.

But a five run seventh inning for the visitors proved to be the difference, as St. Ambrose went on to win game one of the doubleheader 6-4, as the Spartans fell to a record of 1-6 on the young season.
