Burroughs Hopes Line Up Behind Ezekiel Elliott and Company

Bombers, one win away from a state football title, two years running.

Burroughs Hopes Line Up Behind Ezekiel Elliott and Company

Burroughs and MICDS have plenty in common in football. For one, they will clash in the annual showdown September 22, 2 p.m. on the Rams home turf. Both have key games with Maplewood. The Rams open once more with Maplewood while Burroughs closes the regular portion of the season at MRH October 19.

Both teams lost key players to graduation.

The bad news for coach Gus Frerotte is having to find a new quarterback to replace graduated Davey Holmes. Holmes threw for 2,403 yards and 32 TDs, good enough to reach the Show Me Bowl championships at the Edward Jones Dome last November.

Senior Peter Schnuck should get the nod this fall. Playing a limited role, Schnuck was 19 for 39 for 257 yards and 4 TDs when not playing wide receiver.

Obviously, the power force will be built behind sturdy 200 pound rusher, senior All American Ezekiel Elliott. Last spring, before dominating the state track meet in sprints and hurdles, Elliott gave a verbal commitment to the Ohio State University. He can make that binding in November.

Elliott led the area in TDs with 42 and rushed for 1,802 yards, averaging a robust 8.5 yards per carry.

Wide receiver Foye Oluokun returns. He had 9 TDs through the air and caught 41 balls for 669 yards.

Xavier Bledsoe returns to shore up the linebacking. There will be gaps to fill with the graduation of Sam Hefler (Dartmouth) and Bear Kaminer (Amherst).

Nathan Adams, a baseball star caught 50 balls for 894 yards and will play baseball for Yale.

Frerotte looks for major help from returners Trevor Bain, Jimmy Fort and rusher Cruz Riley who had 257 yards and 4 TDs rushing. A healthy Griff Palan at linebacker will be very helpful.

Burroughs will play one less game this year. They will have a bye in the first round of the Class 3 playoffs with the closing of Imagine College Prep.
