Patch Picks: Read Across Sunset Hills-Crestwood Day

In honor of Read Across America Day, this week's Patch Picks features five must-read books for kids and for grown-up kids. We talked to local librarians to get their picks, but we'd love to hear from you, too. Leave a comment to let us know what you're reading.

Emily Althoff, manager of the Oak Bend branch of St. Louis County Library, asked the staff there for their recommendations. Here are their picks for adults:

  • Water for Elephants, by Sara Gruen
  • The Thirteenth Tale, by Diane Setterfield
  • The Help, by Kathryn Stockette
  • Ageless Body, Timeless Mind, by Deepak Chopra (nonfiction)
  • The Good the Bad and the Barbie, by Tanya Lee Stone (nonfiction)

For young adults, the Oak Bend staff recommended:

  • Forge, by Laurie Anderson
  • Girl in Translation, by Jean Kwok
  • The Hunger Games, by Suzanne Collins

Finally, for children Althoff recommends:

  • Percy Jackson series by Rick Riordan
  • Fancy Nancy series by Jane O’Connor
  • Click Clack Moo, by Doreen Cronin
  • "Old standbys" like Berenstein Bears, Dr. Seuss and Eric Carle

All of these can be found at your local library, whether you use Oak Bend Branch to our north, Tesson Ferry Branch or another one. We also have a couple of local book shops, the and , as well as a and .
