Bernardsville police said at about 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday that Mount Airy Road, Somerset County Route 525, could remain closed for hours more due to a one-car motor vehicle crash that occurred at 5:52 a.m. that day at intersection with Dobbs Street.

Borough police said at that time that it could be as late as midnight before the road is reopened north of Bernards Avenue.

Earlier, around 2 p.m., the road was still closed off while utility crews were placing a new utility pole alongside a cracked pole on the northbound section of the road. Detours were in place.

Police said the one car crash occurred Tuesday morning when a vehicle driven by a 25-year-old man who lives on Berkeley Circle in Basking Ridge left the roadway and struck a utility pole near the intersection of Dobbs Street and Mount Airy Road. On Tuesday afternoon, Bernardsville Lt. Demmings Hoadley said he could not yet release the name of the accident victim or his condition at that time.

The vehicle, a 2006 Audi sustained heavy front end damage as the result of the accident, police said. The driver of the vehicle was transported to Morristown Memorial Hospital by the Bernardsville First Aid Squad for the treatment of unspecified injuries.

Drivers are requested to avoid the area and seek an alternate route where possible, at the request of borough police.
