Truck, 7 Cars Catch Fire On Interstate In Somerset County

A car carrier with seven cars caught on fire on Sunday afternoon while on Route 287.

BASKING RIDGE, NJ — A truck and the seven cars it was carrying caught on fire while on Interstate 287 in Basking Ridge on Sunday afternoon, police said.

The car carrier caught fire around 4:50 p.m. on Aug. 28 on Rt. 287 North around mile maker 25, causing the right and center lanes to close, New Jersey State Police Sgt. Jeff Flynn said.

The truck driver was uninjured and lanes were reopened around 5:15 p.m.

A number of emergency responders were at the scene including: Basking Ridge Fire, Basking Ridge First Aid Liberty Corner Fire, Bernardsville Fire, Lyons VA Fire, Far Hills-Bedminster Fire, New Vernon Fire, Liberty Corner First Aid Squad, NJ State Police, Somerset County Coordinators, and the NJ DOT.
