A total of 425 students and 15 teachers got their hands dirty at Yanticaw Park, Memorial Park, John H. Walker Middle School and the Nutley High School athletic complex to help make the area a cleaner place.

The Passaic Valley Sewerage Commission cleanup took place Wednesday at 8:30 a.m. at John H. Walker Middle School where the students were broken up into groups and assigned cleanup spots.  Together the groups collected 72 bags of debris, 11 bags of recyclables, a shopping cart, a baby stroller and one large pile of wood.

Last year, the PVSC organized 107 shoreline cleanups with schools, community groups and environmental organizations.

Since the implementation of the PVSC’s River Restoration Program, it has removed more than 11,000 tons of debris from Newark Bay, the Passaic River and its tributaries. It's sponsored more than 970 cleanups at the shoreline in within communities.
