Report: Caputo Bidding Adieu to Belleville

Redistricting Compelling Move, Assemblyman Says

There’s been another development in what is proving to be an eventful week in local politics: Assemblyman Ralph Caputo is leaving Belleville and relocating to Nutley, where he plans to seek re-election from the 28th District, according to a published report.

“I intend to be there very shortly and we’ll see what happens,” Caputo told PolitickerNJ yesterday. He has already begun looking at homes there, he said.

The new legislative district map, released earlier this month,  has left some legislators like Caputo in districts that already have two incumbent Assembly members. With the redistricting, Belleville became part of the 29th District, which consist of Belleville and parts of Newark, including the Ironbound centered on Ferry Street. The the new map -- created following the release of Census data -- takes effect next year.

Nutley is in the new 28th District, which also includes Bloomfield and another part of Newark.

Just a few weeks ago Caputo, who also has a seat on the board of freeholders, said that he would not seek another term as freeholder. There are now no incumbent legislators from Belleville running for freeholder or Assembly in November.
