'Vigilant' Nutley Police Catch Bank Robbery Suspect

Township man allegedly held up Clifton bank early this month

'Vigilant' Nutley Police Catch Bank Robbery Suspect

Nutley police investigating a suspicious vehicle Jan. 10 arrested  a township man suspected of a bank robbery in Clifton earlier this month.

Patrolling officers spotted a car parked in front of a closed business on Washington Avenue around 1:38 am, Nutley police said. A check of the plate revealed it to be invalid, police said.

Police then saw the car slowly drive away and stopped it, questioning the driver, identified as 48-year-old Wayne Winner, NorthJersey.com reported.

Officers speaking to Winner noticed he resembled a suspect in the robbery of the Valley National Bank branch on Main Avenue in Clifton Jan. 4. After Winner was unable to produce a valid driver’s license, officers asked for permission to search the vehicle, which Winner granted, Nutley police said.

Officers discovered a plastic airsoft Colt-style pistol with its orange safety tip removed as well as a black ball cap, eyeglasses and a neck warmer similar to that worn by the robbery suspect. Winner was also in possession of other evidence linking him to the crime, including a bus pass, Nutley police said.

Winner was arrested for possession of an imitation firearm by Nutley police, who contacted Clifton. Clifton police took Winner into custody and charged him with bank robbery.

A Clifton police spokesman praised Nutley police, saying “their vigilance led to the capture,” North Jersey.com reported.

Winner was being held at the Passaic County Jail on $250,000 bail, the site also said.
