100 N.J. Towns Where Your Car Is Least Safe
What New Jersey towns have the highest rates of car theft? We ranked the top 100 per capita, or based on population.

Which New Jersey towns have the highest rates of car theft? The FBI recently released statistics showing the amount of violent crime, thefts and, specifically, motor vehicle thefts in communities across the state. The statistics come from the agency's Uniform Crime Report.
Patch has listed the 100 New Jersey towns with the highest vehicle theft rates, per capita, or based on population. The numbers come from 2015, the most recent year available.
The city with the most thefts is Elizabeth, with 865. But Teterboro tops our list, with a rate of 845 cars stolen per 10,000 people (many of these towns, like Teterboro, do not have 10,000 people, so this is strictly the per capita rate).

Newark is not listed among the FBI's statistics. Spokesman Michael Whitaker said Newark is not listed because providing information to the FBI's Uniform Crime Report is strictly voluntary, and the state's largest city doesn't participate.
The Wall Street Journal, however, reported that Newark had 2,588 auto thefts in 2015, which places it third on our list at 92.9.
