Man Hurt In Route 70 Crash At Herbertsville Road In Brick: Police

Brick police believe the man, Thomas Plaska of Jackson, had a medical episode that led to the crash.

BRICK, NJ — A Jackson Township man was hospitalized Friday afternoon after his car went out of control coming across the Route 70 bridge from Brielle and hit the median in the road at Herbertsville Road, police said Friday.

Thomas Plaska, 28, was taken to Jersey Shore University Medical Center for treatment, Brick Patrolman Scott Dierking said.

The crash happened shortly before 2 p.m. Dierking said motorists who witnessed the crash told police Plaska's tan 2000 Lincoln Town Car was headed west on Route 70 across the Liberty Bridge from Brielle to Brick when his car began swerving back and forth between lanes. The car swerved to the right and hit the outside retaining wall of the bridge but kept going, Dierking said. As the Lincoln entered the intersection with Herbertsville Road, it swerved left and hit the concrete divider between the west and eastbound lanes and came to a stop, he said.

Passing motorists stopped and found Plaska unconscious and called 911, Dierking said, and rendered aid. Brick police and the Brick Police EMS unit along with MONOC paramedics responded, Dierking said, and Plaska was taken to the hospital. His condition was not available.

Traffic was detoured for about an hour, Dierking said.

Dierking and Patrolman Jay Lampiasi investigated the crash with assistance from Detective Waldheim. The preliminary investigation showed Plaska may have suffered a medical episode before the crash that caused him to start swerving, Dierking said.

Anyone who may have witnessed the crash or who has information pertaining to the crash is asked to contact Lampiasi at 732-262-1141.
